Start by beginning to deepen your breath, allowing your eyes to softly focus on a spot in front of you. Gently breathe in . . . and out. Begin to feel gravity pull the weight of your body toward the earth as you settle into the present moment. And with the next exhale, go ahead and allow your eyes to close if you feel safe to do so, or let them rest on something neutral that won’t distract you.
Now, envision in your mind’s eye a bright, ripe lemon. Examine it with curiosity, as though it’s the first time you’ve encountered such a thing. You might begin by imagining what it is like to hold this lemon in your hand . . . feeling the cool, waxy skin against your palm . . . rolling the fruit in your hands to feel its weight . . . noticing its dimpled skin, size, shape. You might also notice its color, observing the way its shade of yellow differs with each contour or as you turn it beneath the light.
Imagine bringing the lemon to your nose and inhaling deeply to notice what you smell. Perhaps you can detect faint citrus oils. Imagine digging your nails into the skin of the lemon, noticing how the scent changes. Does it amplify? Does it come with any memories? How does the texture of the skin change as you do this?
Now, holding the lemon in both hands, imagine that you break the fruit open into two pieces. Perhaps you can hear the fruit splitting as you do so. Notice the sensation of the juice running down your hands or arms. Notice if the scent permeates the air. Look at the inside of the fruit and observe what you see. How do the colors change? What does the inner pulp look like? Describe its texture. Appreciate the incredible change this fruit can undergo.
Now, imagine bringing the lemon to your mouth and nose, taking a moment to deeply inhale. How does the scent differ from before the fruit was opened? Do you notice any changes in your body? Go ahead and imagine taking a bite of the lemon pulp. What happens? Do you salivate? Does your stomach rumble? What does the lemon taste like? What happens as you chew? Does your face change in response? Do memories come to mind?
Take these last few moments to release the image of the lemon. Notice how you feel as you begin to deepen your breath once more. Imagine your body in the space you’re in, feeling the weight of gravity once again grounding you to the earth. And when you’re ready, allow your eyes to gently open.
